The healthcare industry has seen its share of disruption this year with HealthCare.gov and the Affordable Care Act.  Like most industries, the healthcare industry is also being disrupted by cloud computing.  With regulations becoming more stringent all the time, medical practices and other healthcare organizations should consider cloud software for HIPAA compliance and other regulations.

In the early part of 2014 the federal government proposed 72 regulatory changes that directly affect small and mid-size businesses, 12 of which create a $100 million increase in compliance costs, according to Small Businesses for Sensible Regulations.

There are a number of business management solutions that can help support compliance through automated workflows, in-depth audit trails and role-based access restrictions to ensure that client data is always secure. But with the increased cost of compliance, and rapid change in technology, on-site systems are becoming too costly and lack agility that many organizations need to stay competitive.

“Cloud computing has the potential to improve upon the best practices and technology that exist today.  Those healthcare organizations that have been reluctant to move IT assets to public cloud or managed services providers, now see a day when there will be little option but to leverage these services,” said David Linthicum in a recent article on cloud software for HIPAA compliance.   “Budgets are always tight, and the practice of building new data centers as healthcare organizations expand is becoming a bit tiresome to the boards of directors that pay the bills.”

Fear of compliance and security issues in the cloud for healthcare management professionals is largely unfounded, as cloud computing is in most cases more secure than an on-site system.  The truth is that most healthcare organizations will have more efficient front office operations on top of improved security by switching to cloud software for HIPAA compliance.  This opinion is widely held among 21st century thinkers in tech and healthcare industries, especially younger professionals, and we can expect to see the coming generation’s of healthcare professionals adopt cloud solutions in large numbers.
